Oddly Coloured Egg – New Pet mat guide

Sun Darter Hatchling 2

The new Sun Darter Hatchling has been discovered by those on Discord. A very basic ‘how-to’ has been put up on Wowhead however, if you don’t fancy clicking through nearly 80+ separate pages to find out what you need and from where then you’re in luck!

Where the fuck is it??? I want it NOAW!

The egg itself is found in a cave called the Caven of Consumption behind Moonglade, the place where you go to kill that demi-god fish thing in the pond there during one of the festivals… descriptive, I know.

Alright, stop complaining about my shitty directions, Moonglade is here…
Where is Moonglade

The cave pacifies you so you pretty much can’t do anything but consume potions and get your pets out (way-hey) which means that to do anything in there will require things other than how much you can dps-whore. (Or heal-whore depending on what you prefer)

Ok, so I know where it is, but what the fuck do I do???

Yeah, this bit is interesting. So to start with lets just state the obvious. If you don’t want to spend gold on the AH to get the potions you are going to have to compete this on an Alchemist. Why? Because you will need to farm the recipes needed for the potions and they are BoP.
Picking up recipe

If we assume that you don’t want to drop a lot of gold and are just going to farm it then you need to know what you will have to get and then where to find it, right?

OMG, just tell me what I need!!!!1!1!!

Alright, here’s the list of what you need for one person to get through to the pet. But don’t frettle petal, I will go into lists of where to get these in a bit.

Each potion recipe for each potion needed
1 Primal Mana (10 Motes of Mana)
1 Primal Shadow (10 Motes of Shadow)
1 Primal Water (10 Motes of Water)
1 Primal Fire (10 Motes of Fire)
2 Primal Life (20 Motes of Life)
30 Vials
18 Mana Thistles
10+ Pygmy Suckerfish
2 Glassfin Minnow
20+ Noggenfogger Elixir
Little Princess Perky Pug costume
Scotty’s Lucky Coin
Winterfall Firewater
Mug of Dire Brew
Gordok Ogre Suit
2 Alabaster Pigment
And someone who can craft a Scroll of Intellect

What the shit? Where do I find all of that crap?

Ok, lets start with the potion recipes as you can’t really do anything until you have them.
As you farm the recipes you will be able to farm up some of the mats needed as well on your travels so it’s a win-win situation (until you are ganked because your alchemist is a low level char, whelp)

Major Fire Protection Potion

Major Fire Protection Potion
As this is actually the first one you will need in the cave lets start with this. This one is found in The Mechanar in Netherstorm. The recipe drops in both normal and heroic but on normal it drops from additional mobs rather than just from a boss.
On normal you have the options of:

Sunseeker Astromage in the Calculation Chamber in The Mechanar
Sunseeker Astromage in the Calculation Chamber in The Mechanar

Or:

Nethermancer Sepethrea in the Calculation Chamber in The Mechanar
Nethermancer Sepethrea in the Calculation Chamber in The Mechanar

In heroic it just drops from the above boss.

Major Frost Protection Potion

Major Frost Protection Potion

This drops from another dungeon, which makes it nice and easy to farm compared to some of the others… This one drops from the boss at the end.

Nexus-Prince Shaffar in the Mana Tombs
Nexus-Prince Shaffar in the Mana Tombs

The plus side to this one is that you have the ability to collect the Motes of Shadow from some of the mobs inside here as you are farming for the recipe. The drop from the following:

Nexus Terror in The Mana Tombs for Motes of Shadow
Nexus Terror in The Mana Tombs for Motes of Shadow

While this looks like there are millions in here there aren’t, expect one maybe two at each gather of dots. Having said that, if it takes you 10 clears, you may get half of the Motes you need as a byproduct.
They also drop rarely from one of the bosses in here too.

Pandemonius in Mana Tombs for Motes of Shadow
Pandemonius in Mana Tombs for Motes of Shadow

Doesn’t drop them very often but if it does, you get double the amount you would get off the Nexus Terrors. There are more areas to get Motes of Shadow but I will come to that once we get round to the recipe that drops in that same area…

Major Arcane Protection Potion

Major Arcane Protection Potion

Hahaha, you are going to have soooo much fun doing this one! Ok, so you need to get to old Negrand, not the wibbly-wobbly timey-wimey alternate reality Negrand in Draenor. You need to head to that massive white rock in the South West and check out all the little white rocks around it.
You’ll see some bitches in blue/purple robes called Arcanists and possibly lots of people wanting to kill you as soon as you land (the Archanists are a completely different colour compared to the red/orange/pink Raiders so they are easy to spot). The two types of mobs don’t share a spawn point with each other so you can limit yourself to just killing the ones you need.
They also appear around the big rock. There are little work sites that either have one, two or three of the Arcanists working there.

Vir'aani Arcanist in Nagrand
Vir’aani Arcanist in old Nagrand

While you are here however, there is another thing you can do. If you didn’t get enough Motes of Shadow while farming the Frost recipe you can farm the Voidspawn here for them.

Voidspawn in Nagrand for Mote of Shadow
Voidspawn in old Nagrand for Mote of Shadow

Ok, you have gone round a few places, lets recap on what you have and what you don’t have…

  • Arcane recipe
  • Fire recipe
  • Holy recipe
  • Shadow recipe
  • Nature recipe
  • Frost recipe
  • 1 Primal Mana (10 Motes of Mana)
  • 1 Primal Shadow (10 Motes of Shadow)
  • 1 Primal Water (10 Motes of Water)
  • 1 Primal Fire (10 Motes of Fire)
  • 2 Primal Life (20 Motes of Life)
  • 30 Vials
  • 18 Mana Thistles
  • 10+ Pygmy Suckerfish
  • 2 Glassfin Minnow
  • 20+ Noggenfogger Elixir
  • Little Princess Perky Pug costume
  • Scotty’s Lucky Coin
  • Winterfall Firewater
  • Mug of Dire Brew
  • Gordok Ogre Suit
  • 2 Alabaster Pigment

Still a bit to go but we are getting there…

Next up is…

Major Shadow Protection Potion

Major Shadow Protection Potion

These little buggers are in old Shadowmoon Valley, located kinda underneath where your Garrison would have been.

Shadow Council Warlock in Shadowmoon Valley
Shadow Council Warlock in Shadowmoon Valley

These guys have a ferociously quick resapwn rate and are located in a small area that has a lot of infernals just standing there while these warlocks look like they are going to dance around the Maypole in three places in this camp. They are not hard to miss but due to the small location, be prepared to run into members of the opposing faction who will probably not hesitate to take pot shots at you (unless you are on a PvE server, in that case… pussy You will find this easier)

Once you are done farming the recipe you can then move East towards the big rock and farm the Motes of Fire from these guys…

Enraged Fire Spirit in Shadowmoon Valley for Motes of Fire
Enraged Fire Spirit in Shadowmoon Valley for Motes of Fire

Major Holy Protection Potion

Major Holy Protection Potion

This one is found in Blades Edge Mountains and you do have an opportunity to farm Motes of Fire while you are here as well from the fire bastards that roam around. However, I wouldn’t suggest it as it may interfere with you concentrating on killing the fire infernal that spawn sooooooo slooooowwwwlllllllly.

Abyssal Flamebringers in Blades Edge Mountains
Abyssal Flamebringers in Blades Edge Mountains

Ok, these things are huge so you cant miss ’em but, you also have the added annoyance that there is a raised area in the middle of the place that has fucking annoying cannons on there. If you get hit by these fel cannons, they don’t hurt (if you are high enough lvl) but they will cancel anything you are doing because they knock you back. Trying to mount up quickly to get to the next one? Nope, get flung into that add you didn’t need to aggro instead!

If you are still struggling for your motes of fire, and you keep getting killed while farming at the two places mentioned above (ignore this bit if you are on a pussy PvE server) then there is another place that isn’t too bad for drops and the mobs respawn quickly, it is in a distant location from the recipe drops and the mobs are far enough apart that you would only be very unlucky if you got killed by an opposing faction player.

Incandescent Fel Spark in Hellfire Peninsula for Motes of Fire
Incandescent Fel Spark in Hellfire Peninsula for Motes of Fire

Personally, I went here purely because I was very salty about lvl 110’s repeatedly killing my lvl 90 while I was trying to farm my Arcane recipe…

Lets have another look at the list now you have gathered a few more bits…

  • Arcane recipe
  • Fire recipe
  • Holy recipe
  • Shadow recipe
  • Nature recipe
  • Frost recipe
  • 1 Primal Mana (10 Motes of Mana)
  • 1 Primal Shadow (10 Motes of Shadow)
  • 1 Primal Water (10 Motes of Water)
  • 1 Primal Fire (10 Motes of Fire)
  • 2 Primal Life (20 Motes of Life)
  • 30 Vials
  • 18 Mana Thistles
  • 10+ Pygmy Suckerfish
  • 2 Glassfin Minnow
  • 20+ Noggenfogger Elixir
  • Little Princess Perky Pug costume
  • Scotty’s Lucky Coin
  • Winterfall Firewater
  • Mug of Dire Brew
  • Gordok Ogre Suit
  • 2 Alabaster Pigment

Not too much farming to go!

Last recipe, this will either make you cry or laugh… I take no responsibility for emotional distress caused.

Major Nature Protection Potion

Major Nature Protection Potion
Major Nature Protection Potion, purchased in Zangarmarsh

Yeeeeah, ok so this one is going to either be the quickest acquisition ever, or it is going to make you want to cave in your screen with your keyboard… Kinda why I left it to last. You’re committed now so why stop! *elbow nudge*

On the plus side, if you need the rep for this one, the places you can go are swamped with mobs that drop Motes of Life (which is a good thing as they are needed by both the Nature potion and also the Holy potion.) and also the Motes of Water. Bonus!
If you are already exalted and just need the motes, I will explain at the end of this particular section where to get them!

To get your rep, you are going to be running The Steamvaults (the one where you swim down the pipe in the middle of the big lake where all the Naga are, AKA Coilfang Reservoir) over and over again. Fun. However, you can get about 2000 rep on normal per run as a human (soz everyone else) and about 2700 on Heroic. Theres also questing to be had which helps too.

To get down to business as you are going to be in The Steamvaults anyway, lets take a look at the two mobs you will have to kill every last one of to ensure that you get your motes.

Bog Overlords in The Steamvault for the Motes of Life
Bog Overlords in The Steamvault for the Motes of Life
Steam Surger in The Steamvaults for Motes of Water

Once you get to exalted you can then go over to the Cenarion Expedition camp and collect your potion recipe from the Quartermaster.

Cenarion Refuge Quatermaster in Zangarmarsh
Cenarion Refuge Quartermaster in Zangarmarsh

Already exalted and don’t need to run the dungeons for rep?

You will still need to run a couple of The Steamvaults However for the Motes of water, however, the drop rate on Motes of Life are higher in The Underbog. There are more mobs that drop them and you need more of it so it may be better on your time.

Underbog Lurker in The underbog for Motes of Life

Right, you have collected a lot of shit, you never want to see Outland again, what is left?!?

  • Arcane recipe
  • Fire recipe
  • Holy recipe
  • Shadow recipe
  • Nature recipe
  • Frost recipe
  • 1 Primal Mana (10 Motes of Mana)
  • 1 Primal Shadow (10 Motes of Shadow)
  • 1 Primal Water (10 Motes of Water)
  • 1 Primal Fire (10 Motes of Fire)
  • 2 Primal Life (20 Motes of Life)
  • 30 Vials
  • 18 Mana Thistles
  • 10+ Pygmy Suckerfish
  • 2 Glassfin Minnow
  • 20+ Noggenfogger Elixir
  • Little Princess Perky Pug costume
  • Scotty’s Lucky Coin
  • Winterfall Firewater
  • Mug of Dire Brew
  • Gordok Ogre Suit
  • 2 Alabaster Pigment

Lets get that Primal Mana next…

Motes of Mana

If you hover over each pic you can see the names of the mobs but these are the ones you can target if you want Motes of Mana. They are quite spread out over that particular section of land but it also means that they will respawn by the time you get back to them and it gives you more space to avoid other people farming. There is another place which is in Kirin’var Village at the south of Netherstorm, but the tight concentration may make them ideal for max lvl players which may end up in a gank fest (ignore if you are on a pussy PvE server.)

Alternatively, just rumble through the raid version of Karazhan and head to The Menagerie and obliterate everything there.

I have literally seen enough of Outland now to HATE the Burning Crusade expansion. What else is there!?!

Wellll….. Now you need to gather some herbs! Fun right!?!

You need:

Mana Thistle.

No, don’t look up it location… Ok. Fine. You may have to stay in Outland a liiiittttle bit longer.

The only reason that I didn’t state location while you were gathering the motes and recipes is that you may not have your alchemist as your herber. Or you might be clever and have exactly that.
Anyway. There are some places you can go to get this stuff.
If you are collecting the Motes of Shadow in Nagrand then if you are being harrased or there are just too many people there, head to the West and start collecting the Mana Thistle there.

Mana Thistle in Nagrand
Mana Thistle in Nagrand

Another place to farm is the Isle of Quel’Danas, it’s very much out of the way and only really visited by those who are running the dungeons.

Isle of Quel'Danas for Mana Thistle
Isle of Quel’Danas for Mana Thistle

Alternatively it can be found in Terokkar Forest, This is really heavily farmed however near Shattrath but if you still need your Motes of Water, or you just want more to chuck on the AH then there are two option here that may be lucrative…

Mana Thistle in Terokkar Forest

Now are we done with Outland???

Yes. Unless of course you want to revisit any places to farm and then AH the results of your new potion making skills.

Next up on the list is the Vials.

I’m literally putting this in to remind you as you go back from whence you came that you must remember to pick up vials. You need 5 per potion craft, not just one. So that’s 30 in total. Buy them from any vendor that stocks them wherever you are in the world…
What you might want to do now is to make the potions you need and stash them somewhere safe you you don’t accidentally vendor them if your bags become full.

Lets recap on the list now so that you can see whats left and make a plan of action for getting the last few bits…

  • Arcane recipe
  • Fire recipe
  • Holy recipe
  • Shadow recipe
  • Nature recipe
  • Frost recipe
  • 1 Primal Mana (10 Motes of Mana)
  • 1 Primal Shadow (10 Motes of Shadow)
  • 1 Primal Water (10 Motes of Water)
  • 1 Primal Fire (10 Motes of Fire)
  • 2 Primal Life (20 Motes of Life)
  • 30 Vials
  • 18 Mana Thistles
  • 10+ Pygmy Suckerfish
  • 2 Glassfin Minnow
  • 20+ Noggenfogger Elixir
  • Little Princess Perky Pug costume
  • Scotty’s Lucky Coin
  • Winterfall Firewater
  • Mug of Dire Brew
  • Gordok Ogre Suit
  • 2 Alabaster Pigment

Now to work out where you are going and how you can get the rest of the stuff without having a breakdown…

Locations needed to be visited:
Northrend
Pandaria
Eastern Kingdoms
Kalimdor
Broken Shore/Draenor (See note A)

If you have hearthstoned to a major faction city and don’t have access to Pandaria/WoD/Legion – Take the boat to Northrend, we will have a crack at some fishing first!
If you have Legion, just go to Wyrmrest Temple and fly north, it will be quicker or at the very least take the same amount of time as going to Pandaria and using the Dalaran portal there.

Note A – You only need to go to the Broken Shore/Draenor if you are able to access new Dalaran and/or your Garrison. There will be more on it later but don’t panic about the number of continents you need to go to!

Fishing??? I haven’t done any fishing on this char…

Don’t worry, I only had lvl 3 fishing on my char when I did this and still got all the mats I needed. The key is to fish in the actual Schools which are denoted by the swirlies in the water and the animation of generic fish underneath/jumping out.

First up is Crystalsong Forest under Dalaran for the Glassfin Minnows, you only need two of them for the oil you need to make.

Ethereal Oil from Alchemy Trainer
If you haven’t been there before, fly up from the dock you get dropped off and then snag the flight point in the city. Then go under it and fish in the river there.

Glassfin Minnow in Crystalsong Forest for Ethereal Oil
Glassfin Minnow in Crystalsong Forest for Ethereal Oil

You will grab up some Pygmy Suckerfish which we need as well but the drop rate is improved in Howling Fjords and as they drop from any school of fish, you can come by them easier… and you need them for the Pygmy Oil.

Pygmy Oil

Pygmy Suckerfish in Howling Fjord
Pygmy Suckerfish in Howling Fjord

This is where the flight path you picked up in Dalaran is important, if you went to Howling Fjords for the first time also then you can just take the flight path back to save yourself some time.
Once you get back, make these potions and then put them in your bank/safe space for later. Then you need to take the portal to the Caverns of Time in the Violet Citadel as we are going to Kalimdor!

What’s going on in Kalimdor?

Well, this is where you need to pick up three things needed for this pet. You need to collect Noggenfogger Elixir from Gadgetzan, which is in the same area as the Caverns of Time (see, method to my madness!) and then you have to get to Dire Maul dungeon and then also Winterspring for Winterfall Firewater.

Noggenfogger Elixir

Nogginfogger Elixer

Sprinkle Nogginfogger in Gadgetzan
Sprinkle Noggenfogger in Gadgetzan for Noggenfogger Elixir

Get a fair few of these as they are soulbound, so no trades of them in the cave!

Gordok Ogre Suit

Fly up to Feralas and head into Dire Maul. You need to accept the quest The Gordok Ogre Suit from a goblin.

Gordok Ogre Suit

Ogre Suit Quest Giver
Ogre Suit Quest Giver

You will then need to get the Ogre Tannin from a basket on the level above the Goblin and bring it back to him.

Ogre Tannin for Ogre Suit

Once you get the Tannin out of the basket a mob spawns screaming Ogre variations of Silence of the Lambs… Take the Tannin back once you have killed ‘Buffalo Bill’ and then scram, do not put the suit on!!!

Winterfall Firewater

Winterfall Firewater

This one you need to fly to Winterspring. once there, head to the West towards Timbermaw Hold and look out for some bears. There’s a king bear with a high droprate that is a quest mob so the respawn rate is pretty good. However, if you look for any bear in that area with the name ‘Winterfall xxxxxxxx’ then they will have a chance to drop it.

Lets check the list again now that you have done Northrend and Kalimdor….

  • Arcane recipe
  • Fire recipe
  • Holy recipe
  • Shadow recipe
  • Nature recipe
  • Frost recipe
  • 1 Primal Mana (10 Motes of Mana)
  • 1 Primal Shadow (10 Motes of Shadow)
  • 1 Primal Water (10 Motes of Water)
  • 1 Primal Fire (10 Motes of Fire)
  • 2 Primal Life (20 Motes of Life)
  • 30 Vials
  • 18 Mana Thistles
  • 10+ Pygmy Suckerfish
  • 2 Glassfin Minnow
  • 20+ Noggenfogger Elixir
  • Little Princess Perky Pug costume
  • Scotty’s Lucky Coin
  • Winterfall Firewater
  • Mug of Dire Brew
  • Gordok Ogre Suit
  • 2 Alabaster Pigment

So you now have Eastern Kingdoms, Pandaria and potentially Draenor/New Dalaran. I would suggest either:

  1. Hearthstoning to a major faction capital and then going to Pandaria via the portal by the balloon, and either asking someone to carry you.
  2. Find a mage for a portal to the shrine from wherever you are (and then potentially asking for a carry).
  3. Hearthstoning directly to the Shrine of your faction.
  4. Hearthstoning to new Dalaran and then just taking the portal there.

That’s a lot of hearthstoning….

Pandaria… Not been here in a while…

There are only two places you need to go in here, one is in Townlong Steppes and the other is Timeless Isle. Here’s hoping you still have your Timeless Isle Trinket!

(you only need to go to Timeless Isle if you do not have access to a Garrison or to new Dalaran, if you do have access, skip to the next section after robbing Scotty.)

If you do have the Timless Isle Trinket then take it with you as you head out to Townlong Steppes from the Shrine you are at then once you have what you need, you can activate the Trinket to go to the Timeless Isle rather than having to use the god awful flight system or fly so long yourself that you get bored, tab out and then end up dying from fatigue a million miles away from the island itself…

Ok, so in Townlong Steppes, you need to get:

Scotty’s Lucky Coin.

Scotty's Lucky Coin

Scotty in Townlong Steppes

You want to head to the island behind the Temple where the Mantid have taken up residence.

His house is actually hidden behind a Mantid house, While the location on the map above is vaguely accurate, here is a directional arrow to ensure that you are looking at the right house….

Facing Scotty's House
Facing Scotty’s House

once you have found the right Mantid house, there are two ways to get in. One is at the top of the house/in the roots demonstrated by the Hordie, the other is walking in through the pinky/purpley bush on the floor…

Getting behind the Mantid house to get to Scotty's house
Getting behind the Mantid house to get to Scotty’s house

Once you get behind there and find Scotty, you have to murder the little forest sprite and take his prized possessions. Once that deed is done, you  have a costume to collect…

Little Princess Costume for Perky Pug

The Pug pet itself is an achievement reward for completing 100 random dungeons.

The costume comes from two vendors. One is a Rare in Timeless Isle and the other is found in your Garrison and in New Dalaran.

If you don’t have a Garrison or access to new Dalaran then the Timeless Isle is going to be your only bet, this is where using the Trinket helps and you are positioned right on the edge of the Celestial arena. The Vendor is a rare, and has a few spawn points…

You cant really miss him when he is there as he is riding a fucking huge snail… the costume he sells for Timeless coins, if you don’t have enough slaughter everything in sight away from the arena and then come back to purchase.

If you have a Garrison, then go speak to Lio the Lioness at your Menagerie where she sells the costume for one pet token, which can be sent across your account, so if another char has them and your alchemist doesn’t then you can just mail them over.

Ok, now you are done in Pandaria (or new Dalaran/your Garrison, you need to head over to Eastern Kingdoms…

Lets double check the list… Not much to go now!

  • Arcane recipe
  • Fire recipe
  • Holy recipe
  • Shadow recipe
  • Nature recipe
  • Frost recipe
  • 1 Primal Mana (10 Motes of Mana)
  • 1 Primal Shadow (10 Motes of Shadow)

  • 1 Primal Fire (10 Motes of Fire)
  • 2 Primal Life (20 Motes of Life)

  • 20+ Noggenfogger Elixir
  • Little Princess Perky Pug costume
  • Scotty’s Lucky Coin
  • Winterfall Firewater
  • Mug of Dire Brew
  • Gordok Ogre Suit
  • 2 Alabaster Pigment

Two.
More.
Things.

Just one more major thing to go and one that’s trivial! And then you are off to the Cave of Wonders/Cavern of Consumption!

Eastern Kingdoms… And that’s it right?

Yes, once you are done in Eastern Kingdoms, the only place to go is to Moonglade and then perform the actions to get the pet. But for now, lets get that last part.

The trivial part is

Alabaster Pigment

Alabaster Pigment - 2 needed per ink

I would suggest farming this on your herber in Elwynn Forest even if you are Horde due to the closeness to Blackrock Mountain and that it is pretty much empty other than people eRP’ing in Goldshire and duelling outside Stormwind Gates. The herbs are also bloody everywhere.

Turning the pigment into Moonglow ink to then make the Scrolls.

Moonglow Ink

All you need to do is get someone to craft the Scroll of Intellect for you if you have no Scribes or pass the mats around to your other chars to get it made and then send the Scroll back to the one making the pet run.

Scroll of Intellect lvl 1

Mug of Dire Brew

This one is in Blackrock Depths, tucked away in Blackrock Mountain. More specifically, the pub The Grim Guzzler…

Dark Iron Brewer in the Grim Guzzler in Shadowforge City in Blackrock Depths
Dark Iron Brewer in the Grim Guzzler, in Shadowforge City, in Blackrock Depths

You need to locate the Dark Iron Brewer, get drunk with him while he talks about brewing and then when he passes out on the floor, steal the mug he drops. If your drunk ass can see it… And you are done!

Go back to your Hearthstone location and then just gather up all of the bits you need. Get the Perky Pug as a favourite in your pet list so you can access him right away and clear out your bags!
All the Mats

Next stop, Getting through it all to get the pet.
